Quick Hitter
Two men sit and watch the news, a phone close at hand. One is handsome, square-jawed, All-American. The other is, to be blunt... not. Their contrasting appearances belies the fact that they are brothers. Their suits are tailored and expensive, but from their worried expressions, you would never know that they are among the richest men in the world.
The global economy hangs in the balance, as the price of a hot market asset falls off a cliff, threatening to take other currencies and the entire stock market with it. Coming on the heels of a tumultuous period of geopolitical unrest, controversial elections, and inflation, the last thing the world needs is a Black Monday type of crash. It sounds like it could be a scene from 2023, but this is 1980 – Thursday, March 27, to be exact. And it’s not crypto or a hot stock that’s tumbling in price, but rather silver.
The two men are Herbert and Bunker Hunt, the Brothers Hunt. They are oil scions, dreamers, gamblers and, above all, conspiracy theorists. The combination of these factors have led to them attempting to swallow up every last ounce of silver on earth. And now their fortunes – and the world – are in jeopardy. Jimmy Carter’s America holds its last breath as markets buckle and brace for impact. All thanks to two brothers from Dallas with an all-world imagination and a bottomless appetite for risk (and precious metal).
The day will eventually be christened “Silver Thursday.” It will be studied extensively by economists for decades to come. It is also a day that has been completely forgotten by popular culture.
Until now.
