Quick Hitter

In Scott County, Tennessee, sheriff’s deputy John-John Yancey has been shot dead, killed in the back hallway of a single-wide. It was supposed to be a routine bust of a backwoods meth lab. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.

John-John’s wife, Lori, is heartbroken. She hears what happened from his partner, Marty: John-John was killed by a dangerous man on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. Now she’s a widow, raising three boys on her own. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.

Lori is visited by her husband’s colleagues. They tell her that John-John wasn’t killed by the criminal after all; the bullet came from Marty’s gun. Lori is shocked – what a terrible accident. John-John must have gotten caught in the crossfire; Marty must hate himself right now. It definitely wasn’t supposed to happen like this.

Lori watches a press conference in which everyone involved in the meth lab bust is exonerated and the shooting is ruled an accident. The man on the FBI Most Wanted List was never even at the single-wide. None of the details match what she’s been told. Lori, deeply confused and desperate for answers, visits the scene of the crime and discovers that the geography of the space makes this supposedly accidental shooting impossible. It couldn’t have happened like this.

It becomes clear to Lori that if the truth is going to come out, it’s up to her to dig it up. The only way to dig it up is to talk to everyone who was there… and to talk to those who know Marty Carson best.

What she’s left with is a shocking discovery.
