Inspired by true events, The Fence tells the story of the biggest con-and-sting operation in U.S. history, one that saw Detective Sergeant Fredrick Kotto and the Covert Investigations Unit of the San Jose Police Department open a fully functioning pawn shop, and through a series of informants put the word out that it was a safe place to fence stolen property. Not only could one sell stolen property to the shop (no questions asked…), it could make crucial pieces of evidence “disappear” – the things you dare not take to the dump or call Waste Management to pick up. If you didn’t have the guts to burn or bury it, The Fence was the answer. As a result, it became a clearing house of evidence from all types of crimes – even crimes the unit wasn’t previously aware of. Word quickly spread, the shop’s reputation grew in the criminal community, and so too did the rumors and lore. Eventually, criminals would drive hundreds of miles just to unwittingly bring their problems directly to the last people they’d want looking into them.
The engine of the series sees the team of officers who own and operate The Fence going undercover to insert themselves in the lives of the suspects who come to them with their problems – and no easy solutions – before time runs out. People desperate enough, greedy enough, or just trying to survive, the item they deliver always with a fascinating story behind it. Every episode a new piece of evidence, a new McGuffin, a new story. Every week a new sting operation that sees the team having to reverse engineer the evidence to solve the crime the evidence came from – all without ultimately using the evidence itself, or risk exposing the shop and the lives of the officers running it.
